Nathan Cooke, LCSW

Twenty years in this work. Still as invested as day one.

I earned my Master of Social Work from West Virginia University and completed additional post-graduate work in Special Education at Radford University — which gave me an early grounding in the intersection of learning, behavior, and mental health that has shaped how I think about people ever since.

Over the past two decades I've worked with individuals across the full lifespan — children, adolescents, families, and adults — navigating depression, anxiety, ADHD, relationship struggles, trauma, and the quieter challenges that don't have a diagnostic code but still matter. I spent twelve years doing intensive in-home therapy with New River Valley Community Services, working with families in genuine crisis and developing a clinical foundation that no classroom could have provided.

In 2020 I opened New River Healing, LLC — a private practice where I get to do the work I'm most drawn to, with clients who are ready to engage. The practice is built around three approaches that I've seen change lives: CBT, mindfulness, and EMDR. Not because they're fashionable, but because they work.

"Therapy works best when the tools travel with you between sessions. My goal isn't for you to need me indefinitely — it's for you to build a relationship with yourself that lasts."

Three approaches. One integrated practice.

I don't pick a modality and stick to it regardless of fit. Most clients need a combination of approaches — something to work with the thinking, something to work with the body, and often something to reach the memories that neither talk therapy nor skills training fully resolves.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

We examine the thoughts and patterns that maintain anxiety, depression, and avoidance — and build more flexible, accurate ways of responding to them. Skills-based, practical, and grounded in your actual life between sessions.

MBT

Mindfulness-Based Practice

Mindfulness teaches you to observe thoughts and feelings without being swept away by them. In my practice this includes breathwork, grounding, body awareness, and meditation. I don't just teach it; I practice it myself.

EMD

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

For trauma, anxiety, and experiences that have stayed raw despite years of talking about them, EMDR works at the level where those memories are stored. I completed EMDRIA-approved Level 1 and Level 2 training.

Meditation isn't about clearing your mind. It's about changing your relationship to it.

I'm a proponent and teacher of meditation — not in a studio or retreat center, but as a practical, daily skill that anyone can develop. The insight at the center of meditation practice is simple: you can allow thoughts and feelings to come and go without being defined or derailed by them. That's a radical shift for most people living with anxiety.

If you're curious about developing a meditation practice — whether you've never tried it or you tried it once and gave up — that's something we can work on together.

The life I'm living outside these walls.

I'm a father to three incredible kids, and that role shapes everything — how I think about resilience, attachment, repair, and the kind of presence that matters most. We share a deep love for being outdoors: the woods and creeks of Virginia and West Virginia are where we do our best thinking.

I tell you this not because it belongs on a clinical form, but because I think it matters who your therapist is as a person — not just what their license says.

The formal part — for those who want the details.
